Let me just start by saying: I’ve packed a lot of diaper bags in my time. As a mom of three, I’ve gone from the totally overpacked first-time mom bag (yes, I had 4 burp cloths and 3 changes of clothes for one baby) to the streamlined, “I know exactly what I need and nothing more” version I carry today.

Packing a diaper bag is like packing a mini survival kit. You want to be prepared, but not weighed down by stuff you’ll never use. After three kids and a whole lot of trial and error, here’s my list of diaper bag must-haves — the items I actually use and always keep on hand.

1. Diapers and Wipes (obviously)

This one feels obvious, but it’s amazing how many times I’ve run out of diapers mid-outing. I keep about 4–5 diapers in my bag, depending on how long we’ll be out, and a full-size pack of wipes (not those tiny travel ones — we need the big guys).

2. Changing Pad

Most diaper bags come with one, but if yours didn’t, definitely grab a foldable one. Public restrooms are… well, you know. I’ve even done a few trunk changes, and having a changing pad makes all the difference.

3. A Change of Clothes (for baby AND you)

Blowouts don’t care if you have brunch plans. I pack a simple onesie, leggings, and a bib for the baby, and I usually keep a shirt for myself tucked in a side pocket. Learned that one the hard way.

4. Snacks and a Bottle or Sippy Cup

If your baby is eating solids or you have a toddler in tow, snacks are life. I like to pack some fresh fruit, deli meat, cheese, or whatever else I have on hand in our small stainless steel containers—they’re the perfect size for on-the-go snacks. And a bottle or sippy with water or milk, depending on the age.

5. Pacifier (and backup)

If your baby uses a paci, do not forget a backup. They will drop it, throw it, or lose it, and the meltdown will be real. Also, I absolutely loved our Ryan & Rose silicone pacifier clip—it was both cute and practical! But honestly, any good clip will get the job done.

6. Muslin Blanket

This one is so versatile! I use it for nursing coverage, wiping up messes, creating shade in the stroller, or just cuddles. Lightweight and folds up small.

7. Small Toy or Teether

Just one or two things to keep little hands busy while waiting in line or sitting in a cart. I love those little silicone link toys or a crinkle book.

8. Hand Sanitizer & Diaper Cream

Two essentials I always keep in a small pouch inside my bag. I also throw in a few disposable diaper bags for dirty diapers or clothes.

9. My Wallet, Keys, and Lip Balm

Let’s be real — this bag is basically my purse too. I use a mini pouch to keep my things together so I’m not digging around for my wallet at checkout while juggling a baby.

Final Thoughts

Every mom's diaper bag ends up looking a little different — and that’s okay! What matters is that it works for you. These are just the things that have saved my sanity over the years and made outings a little easier (and cleaner).

If you’re a new mom, give yourself time to figure out what you really need. And if you’re on baby #2 or #3, I’m betting your diaper bag is already half what it used to be — because you’ve learned what really matters.
